The attack at a mosque in Quebec City on Sunday was a tragic and shocking event. The University of British Columbia deplores the violence and offers sincere condolences to the victims and their loved ones.
UBC celebrates diversity in all its forms, and is committed to providing an inclusive campus environment for everyone, regardless of religious belief, sexual orientation, gender identity or racial or ethnic background. These are fundamental Canadian – and human – values and therefore, we stand in solidarity with members of the Muslim community.
Flags will be lowered to half-staff at both campuses in memory of the lives lost.

A community gathering was held, Monday, January 30, in the Upper Year Collegium. It was well attended by campus leadership, faculty, staff and students and several students spoke, including the president of the Muslim Student Association. There will likely be more activities planned by the students in the coming days, including a vigil, perhaps in partnership with the Kelowna Muslim community.
