Community Update, April 1, 2022: Reducing Exam Stress

April 1, 2022

Dear members of the UBC community,

I would like to begin by acknowledging that I am speaking to you from the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people.

Final exams will begin in a few weeks, and I realize that many of you will be anxious about how well you do.

But there are ways to reduce the stress that can come with writing exams.

UBC has many resources to help you prepare – whether academic support, stress relief or study tips. I can recommend the exam season resource guide – created by a fourth-year student – at students.ubc.ca/ubclife. Okanagan students can find some good tips at students.ok.ubc.ca. You can also talk to advisors in your Faculty or department who can help you. Just remember, we’re here to help you succeed.

I know you will do well.

I’d like to remind everyone that COVID is still very much with us, and that masks are required when indoors at UBC, whether writing exams, studying, working or socializing. Please continue to observe all COVID protocols and keep yourselves and others safe.

I am pleased to note that yesterday the Board of Governors approved the university’s budget for 2022-23. The budget will help us move forward toward our vision of inspiring people, ideas, and actions for a better world. It prioritizes investments that advance our academic mission, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion, our commitments to Truth and Reconciliation, crucial supports for our students, and our response to the climate emergency.

I am proud of the way our community has come together during this unprecedented and challenging time, and I am confident that our financial plan will help chart a path towards an even stronger university in the years ahead.

Best wishes and stay safe.

Santa J. Ono
President & Vice-Chancellor
