Shaping UBC’s Next Century: An update on the strategic plan

October 1, 2018

As you know, earlier this year, UBC adopted a new strategic plan, Shaping UBC’s Next Century.

Over the past few months, we’ve been busy putting the structures in place to implement the plan. At this time, I’d like to give an update on where we are and where we are going, as we transition from approval of the plan and its inspiring goals to implementation.

During the summer, we developed a robust implementation structure and process that will continue to draw on the passion, ideas and expertise that were so evident during the development of the Strategic Plan.

To ensure we continue to be informed by you — the members of the UBC community, we’ve established a Strategic Plan Implementation Advisory Committee, to provide advice on processes and priorities for implementation.

We’ll be holding forums on both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, to help generate ideas and suggestions regarding the core areas of the plan: People and Places, Research Excellence, Transformative Learning and Local & Global Engagement.

However, even while we continue to consult, we are also moving forward with implementation.

We have held calls for proposals that align with the Strategic plan, including special Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund projects and Research Clusters. More opportunities will be announced shortly.

We have worked with Faculties and Administrative Units on both campuses to identify initial projects in support of the plan, and will be making additional opportunities available during the upcoming budgeting process.

It’s not too late to bring forward suggestions and ideas. If you’ve already come up with ideas, thank you! If you haven’t, we’re open to new suggestions.

To find out what’s going on with the Plan, please go to the website, which we’re continually updating. You’ll find information there about the implementation process, opportunities for engagement, and how to contact us with your suggestions.

I’m excited and inspired by the plan. It gives us the framework to shape UBC’s next century and ensure that UBC continues to inspire people, ideas and actions for a better world.

Best wishes

Professor Santa J. Ono
President and Vice-Chancellor
