Statement on Report of Advisory Panel for the Review of Federal Support for Fundamental Science

April 10, 2017

The University of British Columbia welcomes the release of Investing in Canada’s Future: Strengthening the Foundations of Canadian Research, the report by the Advisory Panel for the Review of Federal Support for Fundamental Science.

“With the panel’s recommendations in hand, Canada’s research community can move forward together towards a more efficient and impactful research funding system,” said Professor Santa Ono, president and vice-chancellor of UBC.

“The report will serve as a foundation for our national discussion on Canada’s fundamental science supports–a system of funding mechanisms that are absolutely critical to our capacity to push the boundaries of knowledge, generate new ideas, and to innovate,” Professor Ono said.

“I commend and congratulate the panelists on their extensive consultation and report, and I thank the Government of Canada for launching and encouraging a national conversation on science funding in Canada,” he said.

“I look forward to reviewing the recommendations in detail and working with colleagues and government partners in the weeks and months ahead to ensure Canada has the globally competitive research ecosystem we need.”

UBC undertook an internal consultation in August and September of 2016 to inform the university’s submission to the panel.

UBC faculty, staff and students discussed research funding and innovation policy matters, including the structure of Canada’s research granting councils, major science initiatives, and emerging technology platforms.

“I thank everyone who took the time to contribute to the discussion, and I look forward to re-convening in the coming months to discuss the findings and recommendations of the Advisory Panel for the Review of Federal Support for Fundamental Science,” said Helen Burt, UBC’s vice president of research.
