Weekly Update, May 14, 2021: Join the Vaccine-Nation

May 14, 2021

Dear members of the UBC community.

Today I’d like to talk about COVID-19 vaccinations. More than two million vaccine doses have already been administered in BC, and tens of thousands of people are getting their vaccines every day.

Everyone over the age of 18 in British Columbia can now register for a vaccination appointment so, I urge you to go online at getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca and register if you haven’t done so already.

Once you register, it won’t be long before you get a text or email telling you when you can book your appointment.

If you live outside BC, please visit your health authority’s website to find out how to get vaccinated where you live.

I received my first COVID-19 vaccination a few weeks ago – the AstraZeneca vaccine. It was such a relief to realize that I was helping to protect myself, my family and everyone else.

It’s easy and it’s convenient. There’s even a vaccination clinic on the UBC Vancouver campus. And you’ll feel great afterwards, knowing that you’ve done your bit to fight COVID-19.

My unsung hero shoutout this week goes to Cecilia Jevitt, the program lead for the midwifery team. Her colleagues and students consider her a visionary leader. In addition to strengthening the program, she set up distributed learning in the first year to increase access for Indigenous and rural students.

She also serves on several committees at the BC Provincial level advocating for and raising awareness of students and midwives in practice. Cecilia, thank you.

And now, for my #songsofcomfort selection this week, I’m pleased to present the UBC University Singers singing Please Stay, by Jake Runestad. I hope you enjoy it.

Stay safe and best wishes.

Santa J. Ono
President and Vice-Chancellor
