The world is grappling with immense challenges. Climate change, environmental degradation, poverty and inequality and racial injustice are just some of the issues we face.

Here at UBC, we’re ready to help face those challenges. We have a research infrastructure powered by some of the world’s brightest minds, and we have faculty, students, staff and  alumni with limitless capacity to serve. It’s our responsibility to leverage that for the global good.

That is why on April 12, we will be launching UBC’s global engagement strategy – called In Service.

This is an incredible opportunity for UBC to stand “In Service” – to ideas, people and the planet.

The UBC community is already working with partners around the world on issues of global relevance, such as climate change, gender equality and literacy.

They are conducting ground-breaking research and building capacity with local communities. Our global learning programs both here and abroad help us better understand the world and our place in it.

Building on our existing networks, and spawning new ones, we are working with partners from a range of sectors and geographies – not just universities, but countries, cities, corporations, non-profits and grassroots community groups.

We are humbled and grateful to be working side-by-side with others who care about building a better society.

On April 12, join me in conversation with friends from the local and international community as we unveil the university’s strategic direction for global engagement for decade ahead – and discuss what it means to be a university “in service” to the world.
