COVID-19: A Message to International Students

April 6, 2020

Dear international students,

I want to take this opportunity to speak to you directly in what I know are very challenging times for you, as they are for all of us at UBC.

International students in Vancouver and the Okanagan are facing unique struggles right now. I know some of you are also experiencing financial hardship.

I want you to know UBC is here to support you however the university can. You are part of the UBC family even when we are required to be physically distant from one another.

UBC is working closely with other universities and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to clarify immigration issues that matter to you. Much of the information we have to date is in the FAQ section of the UBC International Student Guide. If you need to know more, please to talk to your international student advisors.

We know many of you also have questions about housing, about financial supports and what’s next for your studies here at UBC.

We understand your concerns and can assure you, financial and mental health support from UBC is available to international students.

Graduate and undergraduate international students are best advised to speak to Enrolment Services about available emergency financial help. Graduate students should also reach out to their research supervisors or graduate program with questions about their funding.

I encourage our students to review these important resources:

  • Undergraduate students in Vancouver:https://students.ubc.ca/covid19
  • Undergraduate students in the Okanagan: https://students.ok.ubc.ca/international-students/covid19/
  • Graduate students in Vancouver: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/covid-19.
  • Graduate students in the Okanagan: https://gradstudies.ok.ubc.ca/about/updates-covid-19/.

As always, information about UBC’s response to COVID-19 and resources available is at www.ubc.ca.

Best wishes

Santa J. Ono
President
