Q: Why does UBC have a strategic plan, and what is it used for?
A: A strategic plan typically sets out an organization’s vision and priorities, together with accompanying strategies which are realized over multiple years. It is considered to be a foundational document that articulates high-level direction that connects plans from across the institution creating a roadmap for ongoing success.
Q: Why is UBC refreshing its strategic plan now?
A: Since Shaping UBC’s Next Century was launched in 2018, the world has changed in many ways. The last five years have seen substantial change in the world, including a global pandemic, increased geo-political tensions, and the rise of AI, to name just a few. It is important that UBC revisit its goals and priorities to reflect those changes.
Q: How will the refreshed strategic plan relate to existing Faculty and cross-university plans?
A: The refreshed plan will establish institution-wide priorities and actions with an emphasis on those areas that are core to the university and those in which we believe UBC can drive transformative change. Existing Faculty and cross-university plans will be incorporated into the overall consultation process. The aim will be to create a refreshed plan that aligns with and builds on existing plans, as well as articulates any new goals.
Q: Will the refreshed strategic plan be for both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses?
A: The plan will apply across UBC’s campuses and facilities across the province.
Q: How long will the refreshed strategic plan be in place?
A: It is anticipated that the plan will define a series of priorities and actions for the next three to five years, largely focused on UBC’s academic and research goals. The plan will be updated as necessary during this time period.
Q: What role can the UBC community play in the refresh process?
A: Engagement from the UBC community is vital in this process. As the process unfolds, there will be opportunities to submit comments, ideas and suggestions through various formats.
Q: How can I stay in the loop during the process?
A: Regular updates will be posted on this website, via campus-wide emails and on social media.
Q: If I have a question about the process, who can I contact?
